About Burgundy

You've discovered a one-of-a-kind independent school for students age 4 through grade 8. We believe children learn best in an inclusive, creative, and nurturing environment that engages the whole child.

Students here are active partners in their education, and learning is joyful. The magic of Burgundy comes from 4 parts: campus, curriculum, culture, and community.

Burgundy students enjoy two amazing campuses. Our main campus is a former dairy farm, 26 partially wooded acres, just off the busy Beltway of metropolitan Washington, DC. Many people can feel the change in environment as they drive on to the gravel road that leads into our Alexandria campus. We also support the Burgundy Center for Wildlife Studies, nestled in 506 acres of a secluded valley in West Virginia; most students make two trips a year there.

Our curriculum grows out of and often takes inspiration from these incredible natural resources. The curriculum is also hands-on and integrated for all our students — when a class is studying the Middle Ages, their social studies, reading, science, art, and drama lessons will all be focused on that time period. We are a progressive and rigorous school that empower children to explore, discover, and grow — in many ways, not just academically. There is a strong social-emotional component to our curriculum in all grades.

Our founders were parents, not professional educators, trying to create a school where students could have “peace from fear — and an opportunity to develop courage and hope about themselves.”

From its inception, Burgundy has had a culture a bit different than other schools'. Our founders were parents, not professional educators, trying to create a school where students could have “peace from fear — and an opportunity to develop courage and hope about themselves.” Parents volunteered much of their time then to get the school up and running, and there is still an expectation of a robust volunteer commitment today. We’re also proud to be the first racially integrated school in Virginia — years earlier than the law requiring public schools to integrate.

The shared experiences of a Burgundy education create a deep and long-standing bond to the school. Parents sometimes spend nearly as much time at the school as their children do — whether it's volunteering in the library, chaperoning a field trip, giving an interactive presentation on the history of jazz with their band, decorating and staffing the zombie run at the Fall Fair, or taking on any number of additional duties throughout the years. We simply couldn't provide the amazing Burgundy experience without the help! And once you’re in the Burgundy family, you’ll always be a part of it. Alumni, alumni families, and former faculty and staff remain deeply connected to the school in a host of ways.
